“Merantau” A Sacred Journey

By Katyana Whardana Irviandra Gusman

“Merantau” epitomizes a sacred journey ingrained within the fabric of Indonesia’s Minangkabau culture, representing both a fundamental tradition and cherished rite of passage.

Young men and women venture to foreign lands to acquire invaluable experiences and wisdom, which they then bring back to ignite catalytic progress and advancement in their homeland.

Throughout our 9 years together, Andra has always shared with me his cherished memories of living abroad. His journey began at the age of 12 and unfolded in the heart of Australia at the Geelong Grammar School where he embarked on a character-building, distinctive outdoor curriculum.
Continuing his educational journey, Andra pursued further studies at Andover at 16 years old and followed by his time at Tufts University where our paths crossed. Culminating his academic pursuits at Columbia Business School, Andra emerged enriched with a repository of knowledge, experiences, and lifelong friendships forged along the way.
More than ever, I can feel his heightened eagerness to contribute, create, and give back to the world, especially Indonesia.

Congratulations Andra on your graduation! Looking forward to preparing our sails for the next adventure.

Lyrics to Kampuang Nan Jauh Di Mato:

Takana jo kampuang
(Teringat dengan kampung)

Induak ayah adiak sadonyo
(Ibu, ayah, adik dan semuanya)

Raso mahimbau himbau den pulang
(Serasa menanggil saya pulang)

Den takana jo kampuang
(Saya teringat dengan kampung)
